Launches Consumer-Tech Web Site

Yahoo! Inc. unveiled a
Web site Monday to help consumer research, purchase and use
technology products.
The site, Yahoo! Tech, will offer
advice from experts and user-contributed reviews. The movie marks the
latest by the Internet media company to expand into areas, such as
travel, finance, automobiles, and now, technology.
Yahoo! Tech will offer focus on
making technology easier to understand. The site will have information
on hundreds of thousands of products with user product ratings and
reviews through its Yahoo Shopping site, as well as
question-and-answer guides and community features that exist within
the wider Yahoo universe.
Rather than targeting savvy
technology enthusiasts,Yahoo! Tech wants to attract consumers who have
heard about set-top boxes or Internet
protocol television systems (IPTV) but don't own one.
Yahoo also hired several high-tech
advisers to share daily insights. Each adviser will focus on a
specific audience – "The Mom," "The Working Guy," "Techie Diva" and
"The Boomer."
Yahoo also plans to embed original
video programming it is producing throughout the site. In the tech
section Yahoo will serve-up a weekly segment called "Hook Me Up"
hosted by Becky Worley, who formerly covered technology for CNN and
ABC's "Good Morning America."
By launching its technology
section, Yahoo hopes to attractive new advertiser streams from makers
of computers, cellular phones, cameras,
MP3 players and other gadgets, as the
search engine works toward building competitive edge, the company
said.
